John Wayne once said, “Everything in Arizona will bite you, stab you, or stick you!”
Not so John! We know you spent a lot of time making movies here in the 50’s and 60’s, but did you find time to ride over to what has now become Scottsdale? We know that it was a dirt patch with cactus, coyotes, and cattlemen. Our water came from the canals that were built by the Anasazi people and sometimes we even had to drink from a muddy hoof print and were glad to get it!
We had the beginnings of a town when you were here, we were evolving. Did you see the roadside market stands? Great place for grabbing a piece of shade and looking at the local wares for sale. You could have taken home a silver bracelet or two, a string of Mexican chili peppers, and how about a new bolo tie? Indian blankets, fresh dates, beef jerky and some hot Indian fry bread, or a new hand-tooled belt to go with your big new silver belt buckle?
We heard you stopped in and said howdy to our local ranchers at their special gathering spot and shared a whiskey with the boys (the Original Pink Pony), just wished you could have stayed a little longer. We just wanted you to know that those open-air market places moved up the road apiece and put permanent walls up to sell their wares. My have we changed! We call it old Scottsdale now.
But we especially want to thank you for visiting Scottsdale and making Arizona your home away from home. What a beautiful name for a Ranch, The Milky Way. Sort of just rolls off the tongue doesn’t it? Sorry that you couldn’t have stayed longer, but as they say………….until we meet again.
