Born June 8, 1867 in Wisconsin, Frank Lloyd Wright studied at the University of Wisconsin-Madison. He built Taliesin, a Welsh word meaning “shining brow”, in 1937.

The 37,000 square foot residence (including the property’s exterior terraces and courtyards) rests on two acres of land in the McDowell Mountains of the Sonoran Desert.

Wright’s brilliance lies in his integration of art, architecture and elements from the home’s surrounding environment. His main contribution to architecture, in terms of education and theory, is the idea of “Organic Architecture”. The philosophy has three main principles: a respect for the project’s landscape, respect for the client’s needs, and respect for the materials used during the building process.

In terms of Taliesin, Wright respected the nature of the landscape by mixing his cement with rocks found around the property. In this way, he literally incorporated the area’s landscape into Taliesin’s construction.

Frank Lloyd Wright passed away at 91 years old on April 9, 1959 in Phoenix, AZ. He is regarded as one of the best American architects to have ever lived, and his legacy lives on in his various projects and the school that takes his name, the Frank Lloyd Wright School of Architecture.

The school’s main campus has been located at Taliesin West since 1932, when 23 architecture apprentices came to the site to learn from the master. The school continues to promote Wright’s philosophies in their M.Arch degree.
