Scottsdale residents can dispose of their residential hazardous waste items this coming Saturday, November 1, from 7:30 a.m. – 2:00 p.m at 9191 E San Salvador Drive, Scottsdale, AZ 85258. You will need to prove residency in the City of Scottsdale with a picture ID and a city utility bill or rent receipt.
Household Hazardous Waste (HHW) items that will be accepted include:
- Photo Chemicals
- Automotive Fluids
- Household Cleaners
- Pool Acids / Chlorine
- Solvents and Thinners
- Paints / Stains / Varnishes
- Household and Car Batteries
- CFL and Fluorescent Light Bulbs
If you have finished up with that home painting project, be sure to dispose properly of the left over primers and solvent-based paints. Try to donate or recycle them, but if you are unsuccessful, the next best option is to drop them off at one of the City’s HHW Collection Days. Do not throw them in the trash!
In the future, why not use environmentally friendly paint? Stay away from labels that use the words: poison, danger, warning, flammable and toxic, and look for “zero-VOC” or “non-VOC” paint.
Who doesn’t have a pile of dead batteries in the drawer? Don’t throw them in the trash; they aren’t designed to be sent to the landfill.
When collecting your items for disposal, make sure they are stored in a location away from your children. If you absolutely must transport little ones and the chemicals at the same time, by all means make sure they are securely buckled in their seats before loading the chemicals. The best place to store HHW is in your trunk, but if that isn’t practical, a well-ventilated car is the next best option) since you may sit in line for a few minutes waiting your turn to unload.)
Items should be:
- Tightly sealed in the original container and placed in a cardboard box
- Wrapped in towels, cloth or bubble wrap if they are in breakable containers
- Transported to the event in the trunk or bed of your vehicle
