Scottsdale is one of the best communities in the Valley for dogs. The city has countless neighborhood and community parks as well as more than 120 miles of trails in the McDowell Sonoran Preserve, where you can enjoy time with your leashed dog.
But, Scottsdale also has three off-leash dog parks with plenty of open space, shade, and canine water fountains. Your dog can run free, as long as he is under voice control, at these three parks and maybe even make a few new friends.
Click here for the parks’ rules, which are pretty much what you’d expect: basically, don’t bring females in heat or unvaccinated dogs, pick up after your dog, and leave if your dog acts aggressively.
Chaparral Dog Park
The largest of Scottsdale’s dog parks is also its most popular, featuring three acres of grass, canine water fountains, and benches. It’s divided into three separate areas: one for active dogs, one for less active dogs, and one that is closed for maintenance and turf repair.
Details: 5401 N. Hayden Rd., SE corner of Hayden Road & McDonald Drive. Hours: Open Nov. 1 through April 30, 6 a.m.-10 p.m.; May 1 through Oct. 31, 5:30 a.m. to 10 p.m. The park is also closed Tuesdays and Fridays from 8 a.m.-12 p.m. for maintenance.
Horizon Dog Park
This small dog park is located in a retention basin on the far west end of Horizon Park. As such, it is prone to flooding after a storm, so consider the conditions before you go. It has a large shade structure, canine water fountains, and a water feature to control the dust.
Details: 15444 N. 100th St. Hours: Sunrise to sunset. Horizon Dog Park is closed for maintenance on Thursdays from 9:30 a.m.-12:30 p.m.
Vista Del Camino Dog Park
This half-acre dog park has plenty of shade trees, benches, and canine water fountains. Parking is available off of Pierce Street, just north of McKellips Road. The dog park is just north of this parking area.
Details: 7700 E. Roosevelt St. Hours: 5:30 a.m.-10 p.m.
