Turkey Trot Your Way to Health This Thanksgiving: 4 Events in the Scottsdale Area

  • 11/20/14
What is Thanksgiving Day without the Turkey Trot to prepare you for that second helping of pumpkin pie, dressing and gravy? Luckily, there are a number of Turkey Trots being held around the Scottsdale and Phoenix area over the Thanksgiving holiday.

Many families have made this an annual tradition to celebrate with visiting relatives and friends. Whether you are a runner, jogger, walker or trotter, there is something for everyone.

What is a turkey trot? It depends on the event - they can range from "Tot Trots" for ages 6 and under to 10K Trots. And whether it’s a non-competitive stroll around the golf course or shoes are laced and it’s professionally timed, the idea is to just come out for some healthy fun. About the only consistent thing you’ll find at the trots--it’s held on Thanksgiving Day or the following week-end.

Most of the events are scheduled for first thing in the morning, starting the day in a healthy way and building that appetite for when the turkey comes out of the oven.

To explore your options, here are a few of the scheduled trots:

Turkey Trot Phoenix - a 5K, 10K, 1 mile Gobbler Dash, and a Tot Trot (ages 6 and under). There will be a pumpin pie station and a cranberry aid station. Awards for best costumes. Starting at Wesley Bolin Plaza on Jefferson St.

DC Ranch Turkey Trot - a 1-mile loop, or 5K. Starting at Market Street in DC Ranch.

The Phoenician’s Turkey Trot - 5K around the golf course. Starting at the Historic Jokake Inn Entrance.

Turkey Trot Fountain Hills - fitness walk and 5K. Starting at the Fountain Hills Community Center.

Come out and enjoy the weather. You can register in advance for a bib, or just show up. There is a fee or donation for each participant, but the proceeds go to a designated charity. T-shirts are usually part of the advance registration process and some of the races have bonuses and prizes.

Each venue is unique so check what part of the Valley you want to “turkey trot” your way to a healthier holiday, and experience the fun and camaraderie of this annual event.

The day after? Rub those sore calves and head out for some Black Friday shopping!
