Sonoran Seed Pod Installation by Artist Jeff Zischke | Cavalliere Park in Scottsdale

The Sonoran Seed Pods, a series of sculptures located along the hiking trail in Cavalliere Park in North Scottsdale, was introduced to the public in early November. The project, designed and created by artist Jeff Zischke, was made possible by the support of Scottsdale Public Art along with the generous donation of Mr. Frank Crerie.

The conception of this outdoor sculpture garden in the desert dates back nearly twenty years when two friends and Scottsdale residents, Robert Frost and Frank Crerie, discussed the novel idea. Crerie originally wanted to model the garden after the open air museum, Storm King Art Center, outside New York City, but was met with opposition by residents and environmentalists and so it was tabled.

Creative discussion and development continued over the years resulting in eight larger-than-life welded sculptures in the shape of magnified seeds and seed pods based on common Sonoran Desert plants. When you are out hiking, you won’t miss the pods since the size of the sculptures range from 3 feet to 8 feet in diameter and are made from weather resilient corten steel.

You may be familiar with the Zischke's work “Water Striders”, a series of eight large, glowing and color-changing water strider bugs that floated in the canal at the Scottsdale Waterfront from Soleri Bridge and Plaza to the Marshall Way Bridge earlier this year.

Unfortunately Crerie, who passed away two years ago at age 91, never saw the fruition of his efforts and generous donation, but in his absence, his son, Steve Crerie, and friend, Robert Frost, saw that his vision was accomplished.

To see the work of art you have to hike the east end loop trail of the George “Doc” Cavalliere Park at 27775 N. Alma School Parkway in Scottsdale.
