9 Home Design Trends to Watch For

9 Home Design Trends to Watch For

  • 02/17/16
What will be popular in home design and décor for 2016? Industry experts are making predictions for the big and bold.

Here are a few to watch for:

Art deco-inspired patterns and shapes: Watch for art deco to make a comeback this year. According to Zillow, you’ll see the style’s trademark geometric patterns, honeycomb shapes, and sleek lines incorporated into everything from wallpaper to art work.

Encaustic cement tiles: Zillow also predicts that brightly-patterned encaustic cement tiles—handmade tiles produced from cement, marble dust, and mineral pigments that are pressed by hydraulic machines and cured naturally—will make an appearance throughout the house, including kitchen backsplashes, bathroom shower tiles, accent walls, and even fireplace mantles.

One-of-a-kind accent pieces. Generic, box store accent items are out; unique artisan pieces, flea market finds, and travel souvenirs are in, according to Zillow. The article also predicts that big box stores will begin partnering with global artists, making it easier to find those one-of-a-kind and handmade pieces to accent your home.

Two-tone kitchen cabinets. Remodeling and design website Houzz says you’ll be seeing more homes that mix wood tones in the kitchen in 2016. Look for upper cabinets that are white or neutral and lower cabinets in various wood tones and deeper colors.

Kitchen drawers instead of cabinets. Houzz also predicts that the trend to replace lower kitchen cabinets with drawers will continue in the coming year, especially since dividers and inserts are making it easier to organize these spaces.

Colored stainless steel kitchen appliances. Stainless steel appliances don’t have to be shiny silver anymore. You’ll find stainless steel in several colors including black, bronze, and gold. Watch also for more niche appliances—steam ovens, warming drawers, and even kimchi refrigerators—in the 2016 kitchen as well.

Extra-large-format tile. Large-format tiles up to 12 x 24 inches are nothing new in kitchens and bathrooms, but according to Houzz, tiles are only going to get larger this year, even going up to 31 x 71 inches. That’s almost 3 x 6 feet! Contemporary Stone & Tile Design points out that not only do extra-large-format tiles look great, but they’re also easier to maintain since they have fewer grouted joints.

Bathrooms with furnishings. This is the year that bathrooms get a makeover. Look for bold paint and wallpapers, ornate chandeliers, and furnishings like plush chairs and sturdy side tables to turn these often sterile areas into viable living spaces.

Pastel colors. The Patone Color Institute recently released its 2016 color predictions, naming Rose Quartz and Serenity colors of the year. Along with these pink and soft blue hues, industry leaders expect pale yellow, light green, and peach tones to popular.

So, what’s not-so-hot in 2016? Home designers say the mason jars, chalkboard paint, and burlap that have been popular in the last five years are on their way out.
