Throwback Thursday: Pink Pony, Old Town Scottsdale’s First Building and Restaurant

  • 09/11/14
Did you know that Scottsdale’s beloved Pink Pony was the first building and first restaurant in Old Town Scottsdale? Established in 1947, the original “Pony” sat along a dirt road south of its current location, with hitching posts and water troughs for horses.

A peek through its front doors would reveal some of the local ranchers, miners, cowboys, ranch hands and a few real-life, rugged “John Wayne types”. They enjoyed beef from Nebraska, good whiskey and a fine cigar while exchanging tales of the trail and the next cattle drive, purchases and round-ups.

In other words, the Pink Pony was a favorite meeting place for some of the founding fathers of Scottsdale.

In late 1971, the Pony was moved from its original location to where it sits today.

A previous owner had named it Pink Pony as a spoof on Scottsdale’s rugged cowboy reputation. They say that if a horse’s gums appear to be a light pink, he’s a good bet in a race.

With new owners and a new location, you could still enjoy a cold drink, great Nebraska beef, and town gossip. The owners began covering the walls with baseball memorabilia, which added a whole new element to the experience of the place. It quickly became one of the most famous and favorite haunts of baseball players in America.

Just a 3-block walk from the Scottsdale stadium, you could duck into Pink Pony to escape the heat, kick back and relax, and meet some of Scottsdale’s interesting characters.

The building still had its hitching posts, wooden plank walkways, and rain barrels. Most importantly, the building’s western exterior facade was copied by other businesses, shops, galleries, and restaurants that followed. Old Town Scottsdale was born, with a western look and style that eventually caused her to earn the name, “The West’s Most Western Town.”

Pink Pony is a Scottsdale tradition located at: 3831 N. Scottsdale Road, Scottsdale, AZ 85251
