When Genuine Concepts built The Vig at McDowell Mountain in 2017, they gave the 13,000-square-foot building something none of the chain's other locations have: a locker room. Not a coat check. An actual locker room, tucked near the entrance; a trail-goer could rinse off there before sitting down for a burger.
That locker room is one detail in the neighborhood's dining story. McDowell Mountain Ranch's restaurant lineup has grown over time, with newer arrivals joining established spots.
The recent additions are worth understanding before you decide where to eat this weekend.
What Arrived in October
The clearest recent example is Heritage Kitchen + Cocktails, which opened in October 2025 at 10121 E. Bell Road, in the space that used to hold Wandering Donkey Taqueria. The restaurant is run by Chef Christopher Brugman, a Food Network "Chopped" finalist who spent years in the kitchens at Mountain Shadows Resort and Castle Hot Springs before deciding to open something of his own. His partners are restaurant veteran Eric Greenwald, who also owns Lorenzo's Italian Kitchen and several ProteinHouse locations around the Valley, and local investor Mark Goldberg.
Heritage Kitchen + Cocktails is located in the strip mall at Bell Road and Thompson Peak Parkway, adding another option to the neighborhood's dining scene.
“My family is from Asturias, a coastal city in northern Spain,” Brugman told Phoenix New Times.
That line, from an interview Brugman gave before opening, explains the menu more than any marketing copy could. The food draws on Southern Italy, Spain, and Morocco, built around a wood-fired hearth and a signature bread the chef spent close to a decade refining. The space runs 3,200 square feet indoors with another 1,500 square feet of patio wrapped around a fire pit, and the wine program includes a 350-bottle cellar that would look more at home in Old Town than in a neighborhood shopping center off Bell Road.

The Longer List Behind It
Heritage is the newest name, joining a lineup that already includes several established neighborhood restaurants.
Thompson 105, at 10401 E. McDowell Mountain Ranch Road, has been the neighborhood's answer for a celebratory dinner for years. The kitchen runs a wood-fired rotisserie and grill, the menu leans Italian, and the dining room looks straight out at the McDowell Mountains rather than treating the view as an afterthought. It is the kind of place regulars book for anniversaries, not because it is trying to be a destination restaurant, but because it has quietly become the closest thing this part of Scottsdale has to a sure bet.
Rossa Kitchen & Patio sits inside McDowell Mountain Golf Club itself, and its current identity dates to a February 2024 relaunch under the club's owner, Arcis Golf. The renovation centered on a new Neapolitan wood-fired pizza oven, and the club brought in Chef Randy Bennett to build a menu around it. The result functions as a 19th-hole option for club members finishing a round, but it draws plenty of people who never picked up a club that day, mostly because the patio delivers one of the better mountain views available at any restaurant in this zip code.
And then there is The Vig, which has been part of the neighborhood since 2017. Beyond the locker room, the building was designed with large glass windows specifically to pull in the mountain views, and it runs live music Wednesday through Saturday alongside a full lunch, dinner, and weekend brunch schedule. It was the fifth location in the Vig family and the eleventh property under the Genuine Concepts umbrella, but the design choices are specific to this address, not copied from a template.
Together, these four restaurants offer different dining options in McDowell Mountain Ranch, from a casual meal to a special occasion.
What This Means for a Friday Night
If you already live in McDowell Mountain Ranch, the practical question is not whether the neighborhood's food scene improved. It did. The question is which of these fits which night.
- Coming off the trail and want to sit down without changing clothes: The Vig, where trail-goers can rinse off in the locker room before a meal.
- Celebrating something and want a view with the meal: Thompson 105, still the neighborhood's default for a special occasion.
- Finished eighteen holes and want to stay put: Rossa Kitchen & Patio, right there at the club.
- Looking for something new enough to still feel like an event: Heritage Kitchen + Cocktails, less than a year into its run and still building its reputation.
None of these is a hidden gem in the sense that nobody knows about them. They are hidden in the sense that nobody outside this neighborhood has any reason to know about them, which is a very different thing. That is usually the mark of a place people actually intend to stay in.
