Nestled between Black Friday and Cyber Monday is Small Business Saturday taking place on November 29th this year. It is a nationwide program to encourage consumers to shop small businesses for their holiday needs.
The idea, momentum and backing to recognize small businesses came from founding partner and international giant, American Express®. The movement is quickly growing: last year $5.5 billion dollars were spent at small businesses on the Saturday after Thanksgiving.
You can get into the action by going to Scottsdale's Fifth Avenue and SouthBridge shops on Saturday, November 29th from 11:00 am - 7:00 pm. There will be sidewalk sales, live music, art demos, refreshments, holiday carolers and jolly old Saint Nick, himself.
There's a special bonus for shoppers using their American Express card that day. AMEX is giving a $10 statement credit to card members who spend a minimum of $10 at a qualifying small business. American Express is also providing shoppers the ability to win an additional $25 American Express Gift Card.
Why should we shop small? The money spent locally generates tax revenue, which funds police, fire, recreation programs and libraries. Arizona's non-profit, First Arizona, reports that for every $100 spent at local businesses, $73 stays in the local economy, while for every $100 spent at non-local businesses, only $43 stays in the local economy.
