The Scottsdale art scene is not only alive and well but it continues to attract international artists and exhibits like Ocean of Light: Submergence – A Squidsoup Project, that has wowed crowds in London, Sydney, Mexico City, Oslo, Geneva, Buenos Aires and other cities across the globe.

The exhibit can’t really be described but we’ll give it a try. You’ll be navigating virtual space through individually controlled LEDS and the lines will blur as to what is real and what is virtual. It’s an immersive experience full of titillating and mind-blowing 3D dynamic visuals and sound, sort of along the story-line of a psychoactive social experiment in a public setting. What did you expect with a name like Squidsoup?

But to truly wrap your head around the thousands of points of lights floating in space you might want to attend the Artist Talk: Squidsoup, a free event on May 21th at 7:00 p.m. at Scottsdale Museum of Modern Art.

Artist, Anthony Rowe, the founder of the UK-based Squidsoup will be on hand to share the design and the technology used in the installation. Rowe has worked in the digital media medium for 15+ years and he continually challenges himself with research in the crossroads of light, space and human interaction. He not only pushes the envelope in art but in real life as well. One of his personal achievements includes sailing across the Atlantic Ocean single-handedly in 1988.

Other members of the Squidsoup collective project include Liam Birtles, Chris Bennewith, Ollie Brown, and Gaz Bushell.

Put it on your calendar because you’ll only have four months to submerge your senses in a heady spatial light experience that runs May through September.

This one-of-a-kind exhibit sponsored by Dorothy Lincoln-Smith and organized by SMoCA is one NOT to be missed.
