Located between Tucson and Phoenix at Picacho Peak is the infamous Rooster Cogburn Ostrich Ranch. This is a three-generation, family-owned ranch that has been featured on Larry the Cable Guy, Extreme Roadside Attractions, Chef vs City, and Amazing Animals. To see it is to believe it, and seeing it on TV is nowhere near the real life experience.
With a lot of mouths to feed, someone is always there, so you can stop in any day from 9:00 am to 5:00 pm for a self-guided tour. It’s free unless you want the feeding experience: for $7.00, you get to feed the fallow deer, prairie dogs, Lorikeets, Peking ducks, miniature Sicilian donkeys, Nigerian dwarf goats, and, of course, the ostrich.
One of the more popular stops on the ranch is the Rainbow Lorikeet Forest, a tropical 5,000 square foot oasis in the desert, where birds land on you and drink right from a cup you are holding.
If you stop in on the weekend or on a holiday, you’ll get to experience the Monster Truck Tour for an additional fee.
Affordable, fun and a great way to break up the long road trip between Phoenix and Tucson! To find it on your GPS, plug in: 17599 E Peak Lane, Picacho, AZ.
