Mccormick Ranch Was Once a Cattle Ranch and Arabian Horse Farm | Scottsdale

McCormick Ranch, Scottsdale's first master-planned community has a rich and interesting history, and we are going to share it with you.

Today, 27,000 people live in this vibrant, centrally located neighborhood, which was developed between 1972 and 1989. But, before it became the 67 neighborhoods and outstanding amenities that define it today, McCormick Ranch was actually a 4,200 acre cattle ranch and breeding farm for Arabian horses.

McCormick Ranch was named after it's previous owners, Anne and Fowler McCormick.  (Fowler McCormick was the president of International Harvester and the grandson of John D. Rockefeller and of Cyrus McCormick, inventor of "the reaper," a crop harvesting machine.)  The couple purchased the land in 1943 and moved their prized herd of Black Angus and Ayrshire cattle to Scottsdale.

Anne became an avid Arabian-horse breeder.  In 1957, she helped to establish the “first” Scottsdale Show of the Arabian Horse Association of Arizona, which was held at an 80-acre park that she established on what is now the north end of McCormick Ranch (the area around Mountain View and Arabian Trail where all the streets are named after horse breeds.)

The Scottsdale Show eventually became today's famous Arabian Horse Show held at WestWorld.

The McCormicks were extremely philanthropic and believed in the advancement of Scottsdale, so in 1967, the McCormicks legacy to Scottsdale became the donation of 100 acres of land. Thirty of those acres are now McCormick-Stillman Railroad Park,  recognized nationally and internationally as one of Scottsdale’s popular attractions.

They sold the rest of the land in 1970 to Kaiser-Aetna (K-A) for $12.1 million to develop homes.

McCormick Ranch has been recognized as a premier master planned community containing 67 neighborhoods, 2 golf courses, 10 lakes, 25 miles of public trails, parks, resorts, shopping centers, an outstanding hospital campus surrounded by medical specialists, and city municipal services.

The community offers views of nearby Camelback Mountain, lush green vegetation that you don't see in the northern parts of the city, and the convenience of its close proximity to Old Town Scottsdale.
