High-End Furnishings for Your Scottsdale Home at a Fraction of the Cost

High-End Furnishings for Your Scottsdale Home at a Fraction of the Cost

Decorating is part of the fun of buying a new house, especially in Scottsdale. It’s an opportunity to add a few new pieces, freshen up your look, or give your interior a complete makeover.

Paradise Valley Estate Sales, Auctions & Consignment is one of many places in Scottsdale where you can find the perfect pieces for your new home. Now in its 12th year, the store offers an eclectic mix of furniture, original art, accessories, and more, in almost every style.

Mary Cantrell, who co-owns the 3,000-square-foot gallery on Scottsdale Road with Anne Sarvas, says you never know what you’ll find. Some of their most popular items include chests, side tables, dining room tables, chairs, rugs, silverware, and garden furniture--but they’ve even sold cars.

What you won’t find are appliances, tools, or anything poorly made. Cantrell says they look for distinctive, quality pieces in excellent shape. In fact, it’s not uncommon to find a barely used, custom made piece of furniture in their gallery. Part of their success, according to Cantrell, is that people have the opportunity to buy high-end furnishings at a fraction of the original price.

She explains that, as a general rule, items start at half of their original price. If a piece cost $2,000 new, it starts at $1,000 and is marked down every two weeks during the 60-day consignment period. Any item that doesn’t sell within 60 days is then put into a monthly silent auction where customers can bid on them. That $2,000 piece might eventually sell for a $200.

Because there are so many great deals on high-end, quality pieces, inventory moves quickly. Cantrell recommends keeping up to date online, where you’ll find a picture of every item in the store, along with its dimensions. If you see the item online, it is still available for sale unless someone purchased it that day, as everything is updated on a daily basis.

Dropping by on a regular basis has its benefits, too, since you might see an item before its picture is posted at the end of the day. The owners say it’s not uncommon for items to be purchased before they are even put online!

In person, you may also learn from Cantrell or Sarvas, who are almost always at the store, that they have what you’re looking for in one of their three storage units. If not, they’ll add your request to their wish list and let you know if they find something that meets your needs.

While in the store, Cantrell and Sarvas can also put you on the mailing list they maintain for special events, including auctions and estate sales, and give you a permanent bid number so you can bid on upcoming online or gallery auctions. Check the calendar online to find out about upcoming auctions and events.

One of the things that makes the gallery so unique, according to Cantrell, is that everything has a story. At the very least, she and Sarvas can tell you from which estate an item came, but often, they can share information about the owner’s role in the history of Phoenix or the story behind how a piece came into their gallery.

What if you want less stuff, not more? Paradise Valley Estate Sales, Auctions & Consignment can also help you downsize, too. Cantrell and Sarvas will assess your items—whether you have two or three pieces you need to sell, a storage unit full of furniture, or an entire estate—and work with you to get the fairest price for them.

You can even consign some items you’re tired of, take a credit for them when they sell, and then use those credits to purchase replacements from the gallery. Cantrell says people do exactly that all the time.

“We try to make furnishing your home fun, and you can do it here without spending a fortune,” she says.

Paradise Valley Estate Sales, Auctions & Consignment is open Tuesday through Saturday, 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. During the summer, usually the third week in June through the third week in September, it is open by appointment only.
