Ever wondered what rugby is all about? On Saturday, April 23, you can see for yourself as the Arizona State University men’s rugby team takes on the Mexican National Team in the third annual Fiesta Bowl Rugby & Balloon Classic at Scottsdale Stadium.
The game, presented by Mercedes-Benz of Scottsdale, begins at 5:10 pm and will be followed for the first time by a hot air balloon glow held on the playing field at 7 pm. Watch for the Yoda and Darth Vader balloons, which are making their first Arizona appearance at the glow!
Nearly 5,000 fans attended last year’s rugby match-up, but even more are expected to turn out to see the ASU team, which consistently ranks among the Top 15 national teams, challenge the Mexican National Team, which narrowly missed a chance at this year’s Rugby World Cup. The college vs. country game is expected to be much closer than you’d expect.
“I wouldn’t be surprised at the outcome, win or lose, but I definitely believe we have a strong chance,” ASU Rugby Club President Eric Brown told the Scottsdale Independent.
He added that even though the Mexican National Team will likely be bigger—up to 30 pounds heavier—since they are grown men, the college students will likely have better skills as well as be younger and in better shape physically.
“But the thing is, they are a national team, and they got there for a reason,” he said.
In addition to the hot air balloon glow, the event will feature some of the Valley’s best food trucks, VIP tents, and a beer garden. Dozens of motorcycles from Valley dealerships and clubs will also be on display.
After the game, adults can enjoy the onsite GLOW Lounge, a one-night-only nightclub experience that runs until 10 pm.
Tickets for the rugby match are available here. General admission lawn and grandstand seating is $12 in advance and $16 at the door. Student general admission is $8 at the door with a valid and current student ID. Children 12 and under are free.
Premium seating in the first and second rows is available in limited capacity for $22 in advance and $32 at the door. Other premium options include a field pass that gives you access to the field and to a no-host bar. Shaded dugout seating starts at $45.
Free parking is available near the stadium. If you arrive early enough, you may be able to score a space in the parking structures at 2nd Street and Drinkwater Boulevard, 2nd Street and Brown Avenue, and 3rd Street and Craftsman Court. You may also be able to find a spot at the Scottsdale Civic Center, Salty Senorita’s, the Scottsdale Public Library, and on side streets.
