Desert Botanical Garden Wants to Help You Build Your Perfect Garden This Weekend!

  • 10/18/16
A shout out to all homeowners planning their fall gardens, the Desert Botanical Garden is having their annual fall plant sale this weekend that kicks off the 2016-2017 gardening season!

Whether you are looking for trees, shrubs, groundcover or perennials, there are over 30,000 plants to choose from!

Want to add a little Arizona history to your home’s landscape and garden? At this sale there will be featured cuttings from the Garden’s personal collection dating back to the 1940’s. You can have the most talked about landscape in your community by adding some of these rare cuttings! Of course they come with a story that will be shared by the Garden’s horticulturists on purchase.

More importantly, as a homeowner in Arizona we need your help in preserving the Monarch butterfly population. Arizona is on the migration path for the beautiful eastern and western Monarch butterfly and they need milkweed and nectar plants to survive this long and arduous journey.

Since the Monarch population has seriously declined to the tune of 90% over the last two decades, the Garden has initiated the Great Milkweed Grow Out and your help is needed to help educate the public that this plant is not a weed and you and your neighbors should stop removing this plant from your backyard. In fact, you are asked to purchase and plant milkweed in your home garden!

You won’t find the milkweed plant at your local nursery so the Garden is making it easy for you to find by keeping it in stock and have volunteers on hand to answer any questions you may have about reintroducing it to your garden.

And your gift for contributing to the greater plan to save the Monarch? These beautiful winged giants will land in your backyard October through May as they make their way to California and Mexico.

The sale runs Saturday, October 15th from 7 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. and Sunday, October 16th, from 7:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. Admission is free and there will be plenty of help to load the heavier items you have purchased.
