Early this week, Apple announced its decision to move a data center to Arizona. And even better news is their commitment to power the facility with renewable energy - solar, to be exact. This is not a surprise, with Phoenix and the greater surrounding area nicknamed "Valley of the Sun" and Arizona's focus on the development of solar power in the future.
Apple’s move to the Valley is forecasted to bring 150 full-time workers and according to Arizona Governor, Doug Ducey, an expected 300-500 construction and trade jobs are being added to the mix.
It’s a boost to the local economy of Mesa where Apple’s $2 billion commitment - yes that’s a B, not an M - will narrow the gap on high-tech employment on the east side of the Valley in the Eastmark and 202-corridor.
Apple is indisputably one of the world's most innovative companies, and with this infusion of $2 billion to trickle in over the course of a ten-year period, comes the added demand for homes and additional retail. In return Apple is to receive a tax break on power usage and was also incentivized with a 5% property tax rate.
Apple already owned the building where the global command center will be located and it will be interesting to see what retrofitting that giant will cost them. Whatever the cost, it’s great news to the real estate and construction industry here in Arizona.
