12th Annual Day of the Dead Celebration at the Desert Botanical Garden This Weekend

  • 10/29/14
Join the procession at Phoenix’s Desert Botanical Garden‘s during 12th annual Día de los Muertos, or “Day of the Dead” celebration! This event celebrates the Mexican tradition of honoring departed loved ones.

This year, visit the Ofrenda exhibition constructed by local artists. The Offering, is part of the traditional Mexican celebration of Día de los Muertos and is based on the custom of creating a special place for offerings–pictures, candles, flowers and the favorite foods and drinks of those who have passed over. The exhibit runs from 8:00 am – 8:00 pm and is included in admission to The Garden.

Part of the annual tradition is to honor an artist through the commission of a mural and altar, and this year’s artist in residence is Juan Solis. His artwork is available only through the weekend with other fine art and jewelry from an assortment of artists for sale in The Garden’s Mercado.

The week-end long event culminates Sunday at 5:00 pm in La Procesión, The Procession, the ancient passage of walking as a community to burial sites and the placing of candles in honor of those no longer with us.

Food is central to the celebration so come with an appetite and savor the flavors of the Southwest. Dia de los Muertos would not be complete without traditional music and dance and a toast to the dearly departed. A cash bar will be available for beer, wine or margaritas on both Saturday and Sunday from 10:00 am – 5:00 pm.

The Desert Botanical Garden is located at 1201 N. Galvin Parkway in Phoenix. Tickets can be purchased online or at the entrance.
