Scottsdale Museum of Contemporary Art — SMoCA — and the James Turrell Skyspace

Scottsdale Museum of Contemporary Art — SMoCA — and the James Turrell Skyspace

  • 11/13/14
Experience the best of contemporary art, architecture and design right in the middle of downtown Scottsdale. The Scottsdale Museum of Contemporary Art (SMoCA) sits artfully on a 21 acre parcel shared by the Scottsdale Center for Performing Arts, the library and city municipality complex, and attracts thousands of visitors each year.

All are within a short walking distance of each other and provide for an eclectic array of design, music, literature, dance, performance, film and educational venues for all age groups and interests.

Just about any month of the year, a new and rotating exhibit makes its way from around the globe into one of the five galleries of SMoCA.

Who knew? A quiet ZEN state exists right in the middle of the busy art district and shopping mecca of Old Town Scottsdale!

For an extraordinary treat why not slip into the James Turrell Skyspace literally steps off the sidewalk between the SMoCA and Performing Arts Hall. Just a few minutes in this intimate elliptical space, designed to lift our eyes to the sky, will certainly lower your blood pressure and calm the mind. Always free, the SkySpace is a spring board to the museum, a minimalist expression by award-winning architect, Will Bruder.

The museum’s design invites a passerby to embrace its oblong service pod of corrugated and perforated galvanized metal at the west and a softly curved entrance pod of flat-seam galvanized steel at the east. The luminous Scrim Wall, designed by James Carpenter Design Associates, is a series of textured glass sheets joined with dichroic glass spacers to create an almost living, lantern-like effect that curves around the building.

Bruder, Carpenter and Terrell collaborated to create this signature space that places Scottsdale on the map of world-class architecture and design. The museum continues to grow and prosper through collaborations with institutions and community individuals, businesses and foundations.

Headed out to the Scottsdale ArtWalk? Why not plan a visit to SMoCA - admission is free on Thursdays and doors stay open until 9:00 pm.
