1. McDowell Mountain Ranch Aquatic Center
The City of Scottsdale manages this all-inclusive aquatic center. It offers choices for everyone in the family.
You can swim laps, test your diving skills on the 1 or 3 meter diving boards, tube down the water slide or relax on trips down the lazy river. This is a “hot” and hopping cool place on summer days.
2. Scottsdale Fashion Square
This is the Southwest’s largest and most hip (aka cool) shopping mall with “haute” retailers like Barneys New York, Nordstrom, Neiman Marcus, Bebe, Jimmy Choo, Louis Vuitton, Coach and a host of other top retailers. There are restaurants to suit everyone’s fancy and two movie theatres to choose from.
3. Frank Lloyd Wright’s Taliesin West
Discover Frank Lloyd Wright’s seamless blending of architecture and environment at his winter home and studio. The Night Lights tour offers a much cooler option during the evening.
4. AZ on the Rocks
This is Arizona’s largest indoor climbing gym with 30 foot high walls! Whether you’re a beginner or expert climber, AZ on the Rocks will help you learn the ropes or perfect your technique. The higher you climb, the cooler the experience.
5. Scottsdale Artists’ School
You may be the coolest thing next to Leonardo DaVinci when you bring out your inner artist with a course in oil painting or drawing. Scottsdale Artists’ School offers three-day mini-workshops and week-long classes for beginning and advanced artists.
6. Casino Arizona
Hot dice in a cool casino! Casino Arizona has all Las Vegas style games, as well as fine dining and live entertainment at two locations (101 & McKellips and 101 & Indian Bend at Talking Stick Resort).
7. Dave & Busters
Dave & Busters has indoor activities where families can enjoy an afternoon or evening together in cool comfort with 12 state-of-the-art bowling lanes, arcade games, billiards, dining, dancing and more.
8. Musical Instrument Museum
The MIM is the largest musical museum in the world. There are 15,000 instruments and pieces from 200 countries from every continent in the world.
The coolest part of the Musical Instrument Museum are the live performances in the 299 seat theatre, after normal museum hours. Some of the best performers in the world host shows here.
9. Octane Raceway
Hot cars in cool comfort! Get thrills from the excitement of indoor go-kart racing, indoor/outdoor track at speeds over 45 mph! Octane also offers billiards, an arcade, a rock-climbing wall and the Trackside Bar & Grill.
10. Guided hikes through clay mine at Cave Creek Regional Park
Duck into the cool climes of the Clay Mine for guided hikes. The free hikes at Cave Creek Regional Park include moonlight scorpion hunts and historical and geographic jaunts – be sure to bring some water and closed-toe shoes. The hikes are free, but entrance to the park is $6 per vehicle.
