The history of this community dates back to the 1940’s, when the land that is now McCormick Ranch was purchased by Fowler and Anne McCormick as a breeding farm for Arabian horses. (Fowler McCormick was the grandson of Cyrus McCormick, who invented the reaper, a crop-harvesting machine). Anne McCormick’s main interest was raising horses, and she later helped establish Scottsdale’s All Arabian Show. In 1967, Anne donated a parcel of the ranch to the City of Scottsdale for what is now known as McCormick-Stillman Railroad Park.
In 1970, the seven-square-mile ranch was sold to the developer of the McCormick Ranch community, and the community became one of the first master-planned neighborhoods in the Valley.
Ponds that surrounded Anne McCormick’s horse stables were made into man-made lakes. Today there are a total of 10 lakes and they are one of the signature characteristics of McCormick Ranch, along with the lush grassy landscaping, greenbelts and parks. Many of the lakes are stocked with fish and several can be used for sailing.
In addition, more than 25 miles of bicycle paths wind through the development, and there are numerous commercial shopping areas within walking distance of most homes.
Today, there are over 27,000 residents living in McCormick Ranch.
Two 18-hole golf courses wind through the heart of McCormick Ranch, and belong to the public-play McCormick Ranch Golf Club. The Pine Course and Palm Course are aptly named for the types of trees that are predominant on each course. Both courses are parkland-style courses with lush grass and landscaping, mature trees, water features and gorgeous views of Camelback Mountain from many vantage points on the course.
Because of the size of the neighborhood, McCormick Ranch is served by 2 elementary schools, 2 middle schools and 2 high schools – attendance depends on where in the community the student lives:
- Elementary Schools: Cochise and Kiva
- Middle Schools: Cocopah and Mohave
- High Schools: Chaparral and Saguaro
